FIRST Australia has now shared more details about FIRST LEGO League Future Edition, and we’re starting to get a clearer picture of what the post-SPIKE era of FLL will actually look like.
In this video, I break down what we currently know about the new competition format, including the LEGO Education CS & AI system, the new collaborative robot game, the smaller field size, required student roles, age groups, costs, and how Future Edition will run alongside the existing FLL Founders Edition until 2027–2028.
I also share my early thoughts on the shift away from autonomous robot problem-solving, the reduced emphasis on robot design, and what this might mean for student skill development — especially for teams aiming to progress to FTC and beyond.
Finally, I discuss the unanswered questions around the “AI” component and whether it will truly deliver on its promise in future seasons. If you’re a coach, educator, parent, or student involved in FIRST LEGO League, this update is essential viewing as we prepare for the next phase of the program.
